Unmarked Memorial

Playing in the center of a circle
a rotting tree and a stone bench
placed in remembrance, a place
where we act out stories
of others’ lives in front of the blooming
A forsythia bush, a bird chirping, or a bear
standing on hind legs
stretching to the next branch
while calculating the distance
to the ground.

Sister, remember all the things
that have fallen—
The things that stick
and slip the sky
burnt orange and pink
like tears wiped
blood not all forgotten.

My hair is still sticky with sap,
The garden is still green—
pluck a chive
put it between your teeth
remember all the things.

Pardon Me, This Bounty

Tatsoi moth and mite
husk cherry red spider mite
short of what is done—
might a mite eat until full

Breaking apart earth
butterfly—you hang latent
ripped exoskeleton
unfurled and stretched

Steeled wings obscured
kneeling closer a still life
quieter, and perhaps, I
leave a little less curated

Summer Housing

for Phil

I held your hand across my heart
(even in the back stairwell).
We were just kids passing through,
how I missed you —
The gigantic weight of that arch
is crushing. The Gateway
My back shaped into it like a womb
containing a non-denominational prayer.
Remember the chair in that shop window?
That night, you carried me, barefoot.
I still feel it: the loose change,
slick beneath my freezing toes.
We jumped into that chapel moat
musing, are we just collected pennies?
Light dappled, Saarinen, frayed jeans,
the wet cuffs softly scraping the bricks.
We drank under the crescent moon
on top of the Kresge roof and traded
nothing but our shirts for broken recognition.

*MIT fraternities rent rooms to outsiders
(Mainly students from other colleges who spend the summer in the Boston area.)
